Fundraiser for 'much-loved' Irish student hospitalised after US taxi crash nears goal

A fundraiser to help pay the medical bills of an Irish student hospitalised with serious injuries after a taxi crash in the US is almost at its goal.

Twenty two year old Shane Campbell from Kells, Co Meath went to Chicago for the summer with his twin brother, Niall, but his American dream soon became a nightmare as the taxi he was a passenger in was involved in a horrific collision.

Shane has since been a patient in John H Stroger Hospital of Cook County for the past four weeks (since June 5).

According to a Go Fund Me campaign set up to raise funds for his medical bills, Shane was initially maintained in an induced coma and intubated.

As well as several broken bones, Shane suffered significant abdominal trauma which has required ten surgical procedures to date and may require more in the future.

He has thankfully improved, is awake and cognitive, but faces a long road to recovery. He needs several more weeks of medical care in John H Stroger Hospital of Cook County followed by months of rehab.

Although Shane reportedly had travel insurance, which will cover his basic medical needs, medical treatment in the United States is expensive and his insurance falls short of covering everything.
It will not cover any of his rehab care.
So far, the fundraising campaign - which was launched just 4 days ago - has received over €58,000 out of a total €75,000 goal.
Shane's mother Jean has flown from Ireland to be with him and his brother, and will remain in America for the months ahead, while Shane's sister Grace and father David have stayed in Kells for now.
A statement on the Go Fund Me reads, "Shane is a much-loved son, brother, colleague, and teammate within our community.
"His family are known far and wide from Manhattan to Meath. But now they need YOUR help. Shane has shown great courage in his progress so far and is determined to fully recover and get home. Please help support him and his family through this difficult time.
"All monies received will help alleviate the financial costs already incurred and finance Shane's future rehab and care to restore him to full health."
Donations can be made through the Go Fund Me campaign
