'Such sad news' - Search for missing woman stood down as body is discovered in river

A search for a woman seen entering the water on the River Corrib in Galway has been stood down after the tragic discovery of a body on Friday.

An Garda Síochána Galway, RNLI, Galway Lifeboat Station, Rescue 115, Galway Civil Defence, Cleggan Coast Guard Irish Coast Guard and Oranmore Maree Coastal Search Unit were all involved in the operation to find the woman on Friday following the worrying reports.

The search has begun on Thursday morning but Oranmore Maree Coastal Search Unit delivered the tragic update on Friday.

They posted: "Search Update - Standing down. A sincere thanks to everyone who attended the search today. Thankfully the missing casualty was discovered by our Boat crew at approximately 2pm. May she Rest in Peace.

"A sincere thanks to OMCSU Zone Leaders, Base, Drone and Boat teams, and indeed all search agencies involved - An Garda Síochána Galway, RNLI, Galway Lifeboat Station, Rescue 115, Galway Civil Defence. Particular mention to Cleggan Coast Guard Irish Coast Guard - Costelloe Bay who were involved with the recovery."

Locals have been sharing their condolences in reaction to the sad news. One woman said: "Such sad news. Deepest condolences to her family and friends. We are so blessed to have such great search and rescue services and a thank you to my nearest crew from Cleggan who we are always so thankful to have."

Another echoed those sentiments: "Sincere condolences to her family and friends, and well done to the Oranmore Maree Coastal Search Unit for bringing her home to her family. We are so blessed to have you."

A third added: "Thank you to everyone involved in the search unfortunately not the outcome the family wanted but she's in the arm's of Jesus and his blessed mother God rest her soul."
