Met Éireann update on flooding risk for Ireland amid brutal weather twist

Met Éireann is predicting that some parts of Ireland will be at risk from flooding at the weekend as our weather takes a severe turn for the worse.

While they are not predicting the arrival of a storm, heavy rain is likely to wreak havoc, especially in Munster and Leinster, with flooding possible locally in some areas.

In it's latest forecast, Met Éireann says "outbreaks of rain in Munster and south Leinster will continue to move up over Leinster [on Wednesday], reaching eastern parts of Ulster this evening.

"The rain will be heavy in parts, especially in the south. Connacht and most of Ulster will be dry with bright or sunny spells, giving way to increasing cloud later. Highest temperatures of 10 to 14 degrees with light to moderate northeast winds."

For Wednesday night, they say "outbreaks of rain will mainly affect Ulster and Leinster and will be heavy at times, especially near the coast. Rain will be patchier elsewhere with some dry and clear intervals. Lowest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees, coldest in Munster with light to moderate northerly winds."

The forecast for the week continues: "Thursday will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain in Ulster, north Connacht and Leinster extending to all areas and turning heavy at times, especially in the east with spot flooding possible. Drier weather will develop in north Ulster in the evening. Highest temperatures of 9 to 13 degrees with moderate to fresh northerly winds, increasing strong and gusty near the east coast towards evening.

"Thursday night will start off cloudy and wet with rain in many areas. The rain will gradually clear southwards overnight with clear spells and a few showers following. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees with moderate northerly winds.

"Friday will be a cool, bright day with sunny spells and scattered showers, mainly in Ulster, Connacht and west Munster. They'll be more isolated in the east and southeast. Highest temperatures of 10 to 14 degrees with moderate north to northwest winds. Friday night will be cold and mainly dry with clear spells. a touch of grass frost is possible with lowest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees.

"Saturday will be cool and bright with sunny spells and just well scattered showers, these mainly in the west and north. Highest temperatures of 11 to 13 degrees with mostly light to moderate westerly breezes. Saturday night will be dry with clear spells and lowest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees.

"On Sunday morning, rain will develop in the southwest and will spread northeastwards to all areas along with fresh easterly winds, later becoming northeasterly. The rain will be heavy at times, especially in Munster and Leinster with spot flooding possible. Highest temperatures of 11 to 15 degrees. On Sunday night rain will continue, but will gradually clear to the east overnight and early on Monday.

"At the moment, Monday looks like being cool with sunshine and showers and moderate to fresh northwest winds," Met Éireann concludes.
